This elephant quilt has a focus fabric called “elephant walk” by Moda. It is “fussy cut” to show views of royally clad elephants peeking from rich foliage. The colors are jewel-like yet subtle, not overdone. They 9 squares are bordered in 3 fabrics in varying widths and tones going from light, medium and dark. The outer layer is dark emerald green shibori designed by Paula Nadelstern. She designed a shibori fabric which is among the softest I have ever felt. Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique that creates accordion folds of color. Her shibori fabric is no longer made so I only use it in special projects. These enhance the rich jungle setting. The squares are in a background windowpane of butternut fossil fern (benartex). Feather stitching in signature multicolor thread in tropical brights outlines the pattern in this layer. The leaf/berry/flower pattern fabric is repeated in the outer border next to spinach fossil fern. The outer edge is rust “prints de soleil” by Hoffman which surrounds the whole forest in a woody tone and balances the light butternut border. I like to have a dark tone at the outside to contain all the colors. One of a kind as this focus fabric is no longer available. 42" x 42"
