This kalaidescope quilt uses shibori fabric designed by Paula Nadelstern. Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique the produces subtle gradations in color in a pleated pattern. The shades of purple range from rich dark purple, almost indigo, to medium violet. This fabric is no longer available, so I have been saving it for a special project. It is one of my all time favorites. There are 16 windows in the center , each made of a six pointed mandala cut in a kalaidescope pattern. The corners have a triangle using fossil fern by benartex in the color raspberry slush, which gives a luminous floating effect. The outer borders use the shibori in alternating horizontal and vertical cuts to enhance the shading of the fabric. There are 5 diamond on point blocks on each side in light and dark purples and 3 at each corner in the fossil fern fabric. There are narrow strips of deep burgundy flannel enclosing the outer blocks. The colors in this quilt are rich and vibrant and it is incredibly soft.
